I stood at the dark entrance to a cave. I kind of leaned in, peering into the darkness – a little curious, a little concerned, and very much unsure of what I should do. Finally, I took a deep breath and walked a few steps into the darkness of the cave entrance. My eyes adjusted to the lack of light, and I made my way slowly into the deeper recesses of the cave, shuffling my feet so as to not trip on the uneven ground. I turned a corner and suddenly a huge cavern full of light – and gold and treasures – opened before me. I was dumbfounded. Awestruck. It was unbelievable. Had I somehow wandered into Aladdin’s cave (or Smaug’s lair)?! I picked up a gold coin and rushed back outside to tell the others… You’ve got to come see, the riches are endless, it’s amazing… Come on inside!! Yet people ignored me. No one seemed interested. It seemed too crazy; the way was too dark and its end was unknown. Very few wanted to even hear what I had to say, and almost no one wanted to journey back into the cave with me.
As we were wrapping up the New Room conference in Texas in September 2024, this was the picture God gave me. All the treasures of God, the wonderous works of the Holy Spirit, are like this cave of treasures. The cave entrance is open for all who are willing to brave the unknown and pass through in faith. The treasures are unfathomable, all the riches of God are available to us, for His glory and the growth of His kingdom. Yet so few are interested, or even believe it exists.
The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes out and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding the one pearl of great value, went and sold all he had and bought it. Matthew 13:44-46
