Trees Are Not Frantic

Look at the trees, Mindy. It’s crazy – they just stand there, blowing in the wind, absorbing the sunshine. Trees don’t move or rush about, they just stand there – putting down roots to drink deeply from some underground water source. Trees aren’t frantic about their fruit, wondering how many apples or mangoes they’ll produce next year – they simply stand there knowing that they will bear fruit in season.

Blessed is the one whose who delight in the instruction of the Lord … That person is like a tree planted by streams of water which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither – whatever they do prospers. Psalm 1:2-3

Is there a frantic-ness in your soul? A profound desire to bear fruit, to be productive, to have your efforts be of some use in the kingdom of God? Remember the trees. Like the trees, we are called to put down deep roots, drinking deeply of the River of God so that we can bear fruit (in season!) and also so that we do not wither in times of drought. We do have control over how deeply we drink of the Word of God and how we allow it to shape us. We do not have control over what type of fruit we bear, or in what season, or if it is a bountiful harvest or not. Yet the promise remains, for the one who is anchored in the Lord, there will be fruit.

I am the vine, you are the branches. If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing. John 15:5

  1. Love this Psalm & pray it for family, extended family, friends during sleep-challenging nights of concern. A pastor mentioned this summer that “planted” trees revealed that they were intentionally placed in that spot for His purposes-new insight for me! Grateful for your thoughts!
