Imitate Your Leaders

Hebrews 13. Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith (13:7).

The closing verses of Hebrews remind us that who we are and how we live ultimately reflect Jesus’s work in our lives. We are called to live lives of love, holiness, generosity, and purity. Do not neglect to show hospitality. Remember those who are in prison. Let marriage be held in honor among all and the marriage bed be undefiled. Keep your life free from the love of money and be content with what you have (13:1-5). Offer up a sacrifice of praise to God. Do not neglect to do good and share what you have (13:15-16).

God’s expectation for how we live is very high. The good news is that – thanks to the work of Jesus and the new covenant we live under – we have been equipped to live this way! The Holy Spirit is working in us, molding us into the image of God every day.

What about the command to imitate your leaders? Who are your leaders, those who have spoken to Word of God into your life? How are their lives turning out? We are called to imitate their way of life, to obey them, and to submit to their leadership with joy and not groaning (13:17).

What do your leaders do that has led them to a place of spiritual maturity? What practices are a part of their lives that contribute to their character and spiritual growth? Do you know? Maybe you should ask one of them!

If I was guessing, I would imagine they read their Bibles regularly, make time for prayer daily, worship in community, belong to a small group, and have someone hold them accountable. They probably live lives of service, generosity, and are life-long learners. No doubt they are people of faith, like the many heroes of Hebrews 11.

As we close out the letter to the Hebrews today, think of one of your spiritual leaders that you admire. Make a note to yourself to ask them about their lives in the next few days.

We start reading 1 Timothy next!
