1 Thessalonians 3. I have one of those personalities that is always surprised when there are troubles and challenges. In my head I’m often saying, “Really? What in the world?!” Then I must get myself together and adjust to the new challenge without losing my sense of direction and purpose. I realize it is not rational; but I am always hoping and waiting for the day when there are just no more troubles, everyone is happy, and life is smooth and easy. I might be waiting until the day I die for that to come to pass! One of my kids is just the opposite, always expecting things to go wrong or be difficult, and then pleasantly surprised whenever things go smoothly.
Which personality type are you – always surprised by trouble; or always expecting trouble?
The Apostle Paul writes to the church in Thessalonica about the troubles it was facing. I love how the New Living Translation puts it: “We sent Timothy to strengthen you, to encourage you in your faith, and to keep you from being shaken by the troubles you were going through. But you know that we are destined for such troubles. Even while we were with you, we warned you that troubles would soon come – and they did, as you well know.” (1 Thes 3:2-4). Paul warned them that there would be hard times, for challenges are a part of our destiny.
Paul is concerned, because many people struggle in their faith when life becomes complicated. Paul writes, “I sent Timothy to find out whether your faith was still strong. I was afraid that the tempter had gotten the best of you and that our work had been useless.” (1 Thes 3:5). It’s not just that challenges are difficult and often feel defeating; these seasons open a door for the enemy to tempt us to discouragement, bitterness, cynicism, and hopelessness. We must be aware of these temptations and ask the Lord to help us keep perspective and stand strong, while enduring the difficulties.
The Thessalonian church was standing strong in their faith, in spite of difficulties, and we can do the same. What challenges are you facing; can you name them? Ask the Lord to strengthen you. Ask the Lord to encourage you through the support and ministry of other believers. Where is the enemy tempting you to allow bitterness and hopelessness take root? Identify it and resist it.
